Literature Study:
Short Stories
Students will investigate the concepts of journeys and challenges, through a focus on the reasons for exploration, immigration across time, changing cultures and the different definitions of ‘journey’. The short story analysis will not only guide this exploration but also focus on the literary elements specific to that genre. The section on heritage will ask students to elaborate on their understandings of personal journeys and the impact of family, ethnicity and nationality on their heritage. Students will then broaden their understanding of journeys to look at how journeys have affected us on a global scale through an investigation of explorations between the 15th to the 19th centuries. At this point, students will be introduced to basic economic concepts and systems.
Teacher notes
Wherever possible, throughout this unit, we have written the assessments ourselves and shared them with the students. This has included asking the students to edit our own work. The models are not 'polished to perfection'; we want the students to identify problems in structure so that they can become accustomed to the process of editing, rather than seeing it as a threat. The models, together with the assessment rubrics have enabled us to develop students' writing skills. This approach has also promoted the feeling of a learning community.
